From: £30.00

An opportunity for you to see how chicken keeping fits into family life! This session is designed as an introduction to keeping chickens and will give you the opportunity to ask your own questions.
Course runs 10am – 12pm

During the course we will show you how to handle the hens, plus how to maintain your eglu and hen houses (ours is nearly 15 years old and looking as good as new!) looking after the run (ours has survived having a horse sit on it!) plus our daily routines and health checks.

We also have a cube along with a selection of wooden hen houses. We have 25 resident hens at home a mixture of hybrids and pure breeds, aging from 6 months to 6 years old. During the school holidays the numbers swell to over 150 hens so plenty of hens to hug!

Some of the areas we cover during the course are:

  • See an eglu and find out how it works
  • Handle some chickens
  • Eggs and laying
  • Learn how to pick a suitable garden spot
  • Daily care and maintenance requirements
  • How to feed your chickens*
  • Health and wellbeing and observation of looks and behaviour
  • Wing clipping
  • Have a chance to ask as many questions as you want over a cuppa and a slice of cake.

Booked this for my husband and he hasn’t stopped smiling since! The course was exactly at the right level and extremely interesting. Claire and Steve were fantastic, very down to earth, friendly and knowledgeable – we could have stayed all day!!!! Coffee, tea and home made cakes went down a treat!

  2. Jan

Attended the course on Saturday 16th. Claire was very informative and gave me lots of things to think about before embarking on purchasing my own chickens. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is thinking about chicken keeping as it goes through all the important aspects of this in detail. Many thanks Claire. You have made me feel more confident about keeping chickens.

  3. Lee

Josh and I attended Claire & Steve’s hen course on Sunday morning and we absolutely loved it! Being new to chickens we wanted a good overview of what we should/shouldn’t be doing and some owner inside information! This we got in abundance. This course is a must for any chicken keeper, especially a couple of newbie city boys like Josh and I. A wonderful place, amazing people, friendly chickens and good coffee! So glad we went and it was worth every penny!
